Dietary Nutrition & Meal Planning Strategy on GLP-1 Therapy
Optimizing macronutrient intake, protecting lean muscle mass, and minimizing digestive discomfort with Indian cuisine.
1. Prioritizing Dietary Protein to Protect Lean Muscle Mass
Rapid reduction in caloric intake can lead to loss of lean muscle tissue alongside adipose fat. To counteract muscle catabolism:
- Target a daily protein intake of 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of ideal body weight.
- Vegetarian sources: Paneer, Greek yoghurt / hung curd, sprouted moong, edamame, tofu, lentils (dal), and whey/plant protein supplements.
- Non-vegetarian sources: Skinless poultry, egg whites, whole eggs, and steamed/grilled fish.
2. Adapting Traditional Indian Meals
Because incretins delay stomach emptying, high-oil preparations stay in the stomach longer and provoke reflux:
- Eat smaller, frequent portions rather than 2–3 large meals.
- Reduce added oil, ghee, and deep-fried snacks (e.g. samosas, pakoras, puri).
- Separate liquids from solids: drink water 30 minutes before or after meals rather than during meals to prevent premature overfilling.
- Maintain steady daily hydration of 2.5 to 3 liters with adequate electrolytes.
